If someone <em>feels<\/em> they own something, they\u2019re more likely to take it with them\u2014whether they realise it\u2019s a violation or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-an-employee-risk-assessment-era\"><strong>What is an Employee Risk Assessment (ERA)?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An ERA is a rapid, fixed-fee assessment of computing devices, designed to provide actionable insights into key areas of concern. These typically include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>External device attachments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Web browsing histories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Folder and file access activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local system searches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deletion attempts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Log-on and log-off patterns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>File transfer indicators involving external devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ERAs are not full-scale forensic investigations but are structured to provide predictable costs and outputs. The findings are then placed in the hands of legal counsel and the organisation to determine the next steps. This approach brings efficiency and cost control to an otherwise complex process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-often-should-eras-be-conducted\"><strong>How Often Should ERAs Be Conducted?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The frequency of ERAs depends on industry and organisational priorities. Some companies integrate them into their standard offboarding process, while others take a more reactive, case-by-case approach. In highly transactional industries where employees come and go, frequent assessments may not be necessary. A COO, for example, may have a limited understanding of IT systems and assume that investigating \u201cthe computers\u201d is sufficient. This narrow view can trickle down to external legal teams and, ultimately, forensic experts, leading to inefficiencies. Asking the right questions upfront can help focus efforts on the most relevant data sources. Some critical considerations include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>What is alleged to have happened, and is there already supporting evidence?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>If mobile communications (e.g., WhatsApp, Signal) are commonly used, why aren\u2019t they included in the investigation?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Is the primary risk data theft, team poaching, or client solicitation?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asking the right questions upfront keeps risk assessments focused on what truly matters. Maybe it\u2019s firewall logs and company email data, paired with select computer artifacts\u2014without tearing systems down to the studs. The clearer the scope, the sharper the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-immediate-steps-to-mitigate-risk\"><strong>Immediate Steps to Mitigate Risk<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If expert engagement is not immediately possible, organisations should take proactive steps to preserve potential evidence. Recommended actions include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Identify, isolate, and preserve data<\/strong> \u2013 Avoid modifying key devices or data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For mobile devices<\/strong> \u2013 Enable aeroplane mode to prevent remote access.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For computers<\/strong> \u2013 Keep them powered off and, where applicable, secure encryption keys.
